Mark Twain once wrote that golf is “a good walk spoiled.” The Vinoy Golf Course does its part to provide a gorgeous and enjoyable setting, but playing well is up to you!
The Vinoy Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course situated on picturesque Snell Isle. The clubhouse was once a section of a European palace, and is heavily influenced by the Spanish and Moorish Renaissance. The Vinoy website describes its styling as “Designed as a replica of a mosque and open-air market, it features minarets, heavily bracketed cornices, horseshoe and keyhole arches and onion domes.”
In short, after your round of golf, it’s a great place to visit and enjoy a nice cocktail. You can also swim in the clubhouse pool, or relax and enjoy a casual meal in their restaurant overlooking the back 9.
As for the course itself, it was recently redesigned by Ron Garl, creator of several of Florida’s Top 50 courses. Garl’s redesign incorporates the island’s natural terrain, and plays host to a wide variety of its native wildlife.
For golfers, you can read their Course Tips on their website.
Golfers may also want to take note of the Pasadena Golf Club – or, more precisely, the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. The club, first opened in 1924, has hosted a who’s who of legendary golfers, including Walter Hagen, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, and Arnold Palmer. Walter Hagen, in fact, served as the golf course’s first pro, and the course underwent a redesign by Arnold Palmer in the 1980s. The course is conveniently located right here in Gulfport!
After a day out on the course, there’s nothing better than a cold beer! You have two options:
- You head on over to some of Gulfport’s most awesome bars for games, live music, and a cold brew.
- You go right to the source! Pete is home to several great breweries featuring award-winning beers and fun settings.
If you choose the first option, check out O’Maddy’s, Neptune’s, or Salty’s. All 3 are excellent places to spend an afternoon and evening. We recently wrote a blog post (We Know Five of the Best Bars in St. Petersburg, FL) which examines them more in-depth.
The second option is to go straight to the source. What better place to have a beer than sitting in the brewery’s biergarten. The brewery’s employees can offer much more insight into their own beer than the average bartender.
Two of St. Petersburg’s best breweries (which we’ve documented in the past) are 3 Daughers Brewing and Green Bench Brewing. Both breweries offer outstanding, handcrafted beers in fun-loving environments. Don’t miss out on a chance to sample some of Florida’s finest beers!
And when it’s all said and done, return to your beautiful suite at the Historic Peninsula Inn. The inn, located in the heart of downtown Gulfport, has a variety of accommodations suitable for everyone, from the solo business traveler to the family of four touring Old Florida.
