3 Reasons You Need to Go to the Morean Arts Center

Morean Arts CenterIf you love art, don’t miss the Morean Arts Center!  The Center, located in downtown St. Petersburg, is one of the area’s finest art studios.  We’re here to present you with 3 good reasons you need to visit the gallery.

1. See the Contemporary Art Exhibits at Morean Arts Center

At present, the gallery is exhibiting ‘Mentoring’-themed works.  The gallery invited 17 Florida-based artists to create works, along with someone they’re inspired by, and someone they inspire.  The groupings will be displayed as trios in order to create discussion.  Admission is free and open to the public.

There is also, at present, a Student/Instructor exhibition.  The Morean Arts Center offers classes (more on that later) to a wide variety of students.  The instructors and their pupils exhibit works in a variety of forms, including photography, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, painting, and drawing.

Future events and exhibitions include:

March 12 – May 1: Exquisite Porch: This exhibition focuses on the “ground-dwelling” life of Florida.  Yes, this exhibition focuses on such animals as lizards, alligators, and snakes, and is based on the surrealist parlor game “Exquisite Corpse.”  The works are intended to raise awareness of the game, and also illustrates and celebrates the fauna of Florida.

March 12 – May 1: Jody Fausett – Crush Velvet: Jody Fausett is an Atlanta-based photographer whose work, according to the gallery’s website, “deals with human vulnerability, the self-construction of facades, the rites of ownership, and the creation of personal icons that represent who and what we are. His ideas are a collision of interests: the encounters he depicts unfold quietly and are laced with the fantastic, a kind of fantastic that deals with personal identity and that overcomes struggle.”

2. Take Classes and Workshops With Local Artists

All aspiring artists should take note of the Morean’s classes and workshops.  The classes range from 3-6 weeks, so they may not be an option for the average vacation, but there are plenty of single-day workshops on the docket.

To view a complete listing of upcoming workshops, visit their website.

3. Support Their Community Outreach Efforts

The Morean also performs a significant amount of work offering classes to at-risk youth.  For many of these children, it’s a potential way out of hardship, and nurturing this talent will lead to a brighter future.  If you’d like to contribute to their cause, you can do so on their Support Us page.

The Morean Arts Center is located at 719 Central Avenue in St. Petersburg at the corner of Central Avenue N. and 8th Street. The gallery and store are are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
