Wine-lovers know the names: Sonoma. Napa Valley. Bordeaux. Tuscany. La Rioja.
But what about St. Petersburg, Florida?
Introducing the Florida Orange Groves Winery
Okay, so the wines at the Florida Orange Groves Winery are a little bit different than the varietals produced at legendary vineyards. The most obvious difference is the main ingredient: tropical fruit. Yes, instead of grapes, the folks at the winery utilize 100% fresh, locally-grown tropical fruit — and quite a bit of it! According to their website, several of their varietals (Mango Mamma, Orange Sunshine wine, Grapefruit wine, and Tangerine wine) require over 9 pounds of fresh fruit to produce a single bottle!
To date, the winery is the only one in Florida to earn the Florida Department of Citrus’ official mark of superior quality: the Florida Sunshine Tree. Also, you may be familiar with Disney’s International Food and Wine Festival. The Florida Orange Groves Winery is the only Florida winery ever allowed to participate, and it has for the last 15 years. That’s high praise, indeed!
Interested in learning more? Why not drop by? The winery offers tours from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday. All tours start on the half-hour. Those interested in sampling the wines will find the tasting room open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Learn more about the winery on the Florida Orange Groves Winery website.
Visit Gulfport’s Best Restaurants
After your delicious trip to the winery, visit some of Gulfport’s best restaurants. The Gulfport area offers a wide variety of locally-owned and operated restaurants, which we’ve detailed in the past.
We’re a tad biased, but we recommend Isabelle’s. Isabelle’s is our in-house restaurant, and offers delicious New Southern cuisine in a cozy environment. If you need further proof, Rand McNally awarded it their “Best of the Beaches” and “Best of the Road” awards.
However, if Southern cuisine isn’t your thing, try Gulfport’s favorite Italian restaurant: Pia’s Trattoria. The Trattoria offers delicious food, great scenery, and astonishing desserts. The ever-changing menu offers seasonal favorites made with fresh, local ingredients.
Some people love restaurants that offer breakfast all day. If that’s you, venture over to Stella’s. Stella’s offers scrumptious items like sausage and gravy, fried green tomatoes, corned beef hash, reubens, and much, much more.
For the health conscious, we recommend Mangia Gourmet. Mangia’s purpose is to create “tasty, homemade, local, and environmentally-friendly foods Including vegan, gluten free, vegetarian, and organic!”
And after a day testing tropical fruit wines and enjoying Gulfport’s incredible dining, return to your beautiful suite at the Historic Peninsula Inn. Our beautiful suites fit a variety of needs. Whether you’re a solo business traveler or a family of four, we have a suite for you! We hope to see you soon!
