There’s nothing like stretching your legs surrounded by fresh air, natural beauty, and bountiful wildlife. The Clam Bayou Nature Preserve in Gulfport meets all of these criteria, making it an ideal place for a pleasant stroll. Come see why visitors rave about the experience.
About the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve
Clam Bayou is a 170-acre estuary seated between Gulfport, St. Petersburg, and Boca Ciega Bay. The Nature Preserve portion of Clam Bayou encompasses 10 acres, nature and hiking trails, observation decks and docks, and a spot to launch a canoe and kayak. From those points, you can see some of the many plants and animals the area has to offer, including:
· Mangrove forests
· Fiddler crabs
· A wide variety of birds (pelicans, egrets, eagles, and herons, etc.)
If you love beauty, it’s a great place to spend an hour or two.
Adventure at the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve
For more adventurous types, you can also launch a canoe or kayak within the preserve. Get out on the water and paddle around the stunning and picturesque marshland, enjoying the wildlife from a different perspective. This method offers more freedom (not to mention a better workout!) than the hiking trails.
Once you’ve had your fill of Gulfport’s natural beauty, head back downtown and visit the numerous local shops and restaurants in this beautiful, Bohemian town. Beach Boulevard is a perfect place to explore, offering intriguing shops, great restaurants, and a beautiful view of the water. On Tuesdays, the boulevard turns into the Gulfport’s Tuesday Fresh Market, featuring fresh vegetables, live music, shows from local artists and craftsmen, jewelry, and street food.
On the evening of the first Friday and third Saturday of every month, Gulfport hosts its famous Art Walks. The Art Walks feature works from dozens of local artisans in such media as “wood crafts, sculpture, handmade/designed clothing and accessories, imported metal art, painted glass, handmade candles, aromatherapy, massage, shell crafts, clay art, jewelry, upcycled items, body products, pet products, authors, and more.” There is also live music, of course, so come dance in the streets on a warm Florida night.
As an added bonus, the various Markets/Art Walks are completely free of charge, and all within walking distance of some of Gulfport’s finest restaurants (including Isabelle’s, the Historic Peninsula Inn’s own award-winning restaurant).
So, if you happen to be in Gulfport on one of those days, enjoy a beautiful stroll or paddle around a wildlife-filled estuary, explore handcrafted local artwork in a festival atmosphere, and then stop in for some New Southern cuisine at a restaurant (Isabelle’s) which has been named “Best of the Beaches” four times.
(If New Southern cuisine isn’t to your liking, visit any of the dozen-plus locally-owned and operated eateries just a pleasant walk away.)
In short, if you’re looking to get away, come join us in Gulfport at the Historic Peninsula Inn. We offer beautiful suites in a beautiful, unique, Old Florida setting. Come see why people are falling in love with our inn and our town! For more information, download your free Gulfport vacation guide!
